Is Online Sports Betting Legal?

First and foremost, the Betwiser blog is all about sports betting online, so in our interests, we’re hoping that it sure as heck is legal. Read on to find out.

The short (and long) answer is that sports’ betting online is legal… and illegal. It all depends on where in the world you call home. Some governments in the world have banned this activity from taking place altogether, while other government have the industry heavily regulated.

Betting agencies are not allowed to offer their services to countries that have found online sports betting to be illegal. Typically a resident of such a country will simply not be able to register on the betting agencies website. For example: Betfair will not let residents of Japan register with their site.

While this is a safe way to protected people from breaking the law, it’s still worth noting the specific countries that do not allow it.

Countries that have banned Online Sports Betting

These are the countries that do not allow sports betting online. Here at Betwiser, we feel a deep sadness for the citizens of these countries:

  • China & Hong Kong
  • France
  • Japan
  • India
  • Russia
  • Turkey
  • USA (with the exception of the State of Nevada)

Online sports betting legislation is an on-going process in most countries that prohibit it. There have been many calls for online sports betting to be legalised, and regulated in the USA. This issue will be debated in Congress in the year 2010. Should online sports betting become legal, it will dramatically and predictably increase the number of punters in the world.

Luckily Australia is not on this list.

You still need to be careful!

Just because a country is not listed on the above list does not mean that all betting agencies in legal countries will be safe. The truth is that some organisations can practice in scams (and other such unethical practices)

Online sports betting should be fun, but there is no fun in being cheated. That’s why it’s a good idea to only sign up to the betting agencies that hold a reputable name.

We’ve put together a list of the betting agencies that you can register within Australia that have proven themselves to be trustworthy. They all hold licences and are all put through audits at times.

Find out if your current betting agency is reputable

There are a couple of ways to find out if the current betting agency that you deal with is one that you should trust. If you haven’t done any of the following steps than we suggest that you take the time after you finish reading this to check with your agency.

It’s always better to be safe than sorry. Here are some things you should check:

  • Check the website thoroughly by reading the fine print Terms and Conditions (T&C), privacy policy, refund, betting policy and contact information
  • Check for a current betting license
  • Check the country that the license is registered in
  • Do a Google search of the company followed by the word “dispute” or “feedback” or “concerns” – take some time to read through what peoples experience have been
  • Get feedback from people you know that have used the agency before. Ask questions like; “Have you had any concerns about company ABC?”

If you are reading this post from a country that does not accept online sports betting, don’t be so bummed out. The trend seems to be that things will turn around for you. If you can’t wait for things to turn around, move to Australia.
